Why I Chose Watercolors for Little Little’s Triumph

Each book I create reflects something personal—a feeling, a lesson, or a moment I want to share with young readers. When I began working on Little Little’s Triumph, I knew it would be different from my other stories. The theme of focus called for a softer, more meditative visual approach especially taking into consideration my chosen characters
which are marine animals—and that’s when I turned to watercolors.
Until now, I’ve used colored pencils and markers in my illustrations. They brought vibrance and texture to my earlier books, and I’ve loved working with them. But for this story, I wanted something that felt calmer, more fluid, and a little dreamier. Watercolors naturally carry a quiet beauty—perfect for a character learning how to focus, imagine, and persevere.
Using this new medium also challenged me creatively. I had always admired water color art but shied away from it. Taking the chance pushed me to slow down and be intentional with every brushstroke, which, in its own way, echoed the theme of the story itself. I had to stay focused—just like Little Little.
I can’t wait for you to experience the world of Little Little’s Triumph through these new illustrations. I hope they feel as gentle and inspiring to you as they felt to me while painting them.
Releasing May 14, 2025. Stay tuned!
